If you use WordPress as a CMS for your real estate website, you may be wondering what you can do to improve your online marketing results. Since almost all agents now have websites, they can really benefit from using SEO.

Since we work with many real estate agents at Ozio Media, I thought it would be appropriate to read and respond to a blog post about SEO tips for real estate agents.

Recently in an article published by Dan Zarzycki, “11 WordPress real estate website ideas to rank on Google,” Zarzycki discussed a number of important tips that you can use to improve your online marketing results for your real estate website. These tips include:

As a response to this article, I think that you need to be careful not to just compete for the top keywords. Many agents go wrong by trying to rank in search engines for some of the more general keywords.

Real Estate Agents Should Stop Wasting Time on the Most Expensive Keywords

The top real estate keywords are already being targeted by the huge real estate websites, like Zillow, Trulia and Realtor.com. Big name brokerages also have teams of SEO experts who concentrate solely on maintaining high rankings for these top keywords.

Average agents waste time and money by trying to compete with these sites. It’s better for the average agent to focus on those long-tail keywords which include search terms that people might type in order to find a more specific solution to a problem.

For instance a better long tail keyword might be “single family homes under $500,000 in Anaheim California” as opposed to “Anaheim California real estate agent.”

Agents who are new to SEO need to understand that they need a targeted and consistent SEO strategy. Achieving organic rankings takes time and patience.

Use PPC Advertising to Find Keywords You Can Actually Rank for

If agents want more immediate results and to determine which long tail keywords to target, they can use Pay-per-Click (PPC) advertising. This allows them to get views from website users for their keywords right away.

Again though, this strategy is best used for the long-tail keyword phrases as there will be a lot of competition for the top keywords and it can be very expensive to try and compete.

While the search volume might not be as high for long-tail keywords I just described, they are much more cost-effective if you are working with a limited PPC advertising budget.
